Biology Paper is surprisingly easy but…
0I said yesterday on this post that I am scared of Biology, or did I? Anyway I always fear of Biology…. always but Mr. Ho is a good teacher, don’t be mistaken.
When I was checking the page number, the feeling of the paper is that it is easy and when I do, it confirms my feeling. It was easy but thinking about it now, I am scared that I made stupid mistakes like I always did in simple paper. Those difficult paper during MYE or EOY, I will always pass by a margin like my A.Math got 50% for both 06′s MYE and EOY but easy paper and the one which I was most confident with only with 32%.
Last year, after our Math’s paper, I told Ibrahim that it is really easy and I take 32% in the end? Oh dear…. This time, I told Mr. Ho that its easy… Will I not even pass the paper? Lets wait for the result.
Math and Chinese 2 tomorrow!
I just installed WordPress Gallery 2 on my blog with a few plugin like Imageblock and Imageframe. It was a nightmare, due to the fact I was using Sidebar Widgets Plugin, I have a lot of problems putting what you see at the top right hand in the right navigation now. First it will not appear the next it appear but its not what is suppose to look it and next it messed up my whole blog. I took a long time to make it what you see right now. I am forced into changing the php thing. Its not easy as putting a php print function because of Sidebar Widgets.
Moral of story: Never use Sidebar Widget and Gallery 2 together if you want picture to appear on Sidebar.
Next, if you click on the image, that page is messed up. I will use some time tomorrow to edit the code after I studied A.Math and finish watching the the discs I bought from beijingwushuteam.com. They just arrived together but the casing were all cracked but nevertheless the disc is perfectly fine. When I get back my money which someone scam me, I am going to order posters and more discs. I saw a domain I like to be used for the sub-site of that wushu site I am talking about but the .com is taken. Should I register the .net and the rest? I shall think about it.

School time not video time
0I don’t think everyday video time is not a good idea. It will gets boring and it will be like I am copying someone. Lets be orignal and do something that everyone hates. Exam!
For the last 2 weeks, I am having exams and tests and 1 word to describe them. “SUCK”
For the past 2 weeks I had…. in order.
Science Practical
English Language Paper 1
Social Studies
Mathematics 1
Science 3 ( Chemistry )
Physics 2
Geography ( E )
Mother Tongue 1
English Paper 2
and coming up… in order
Science 4 ( Biology )
Mathematics 2
Mother Tongue 2
Additional Mathematics 1
Additional Mathematics 2
Physics 1
Science 1 ( Biology / Chemistry )
Basicially, Only CL and Math 1 is easy. The rest aren’t difficult just no confidence. Haha. Physics 2 / Science – Chemistry are really killer paper. I studied real hard for Chemistry yet its still so difficult. Physics Paper I did studied but those formula, for some reason, I cannot remember them during the time of exam. Section C is okay but Section B kills. Tomorrow is Science – Biology. I still have to go RiceTable tonight for Zhen Ling’s birthday. Its okay. Birthday is only once per year!
Alright, Hong Wei posted something interesting here about wushu.
Montfort Secondary School in Digitial Life!
1Thanks Gary Tan for typing this.
Mr Simen Lourds is no geek. The principal of Montfort Secondary confesses to being “not very good at computers”. Indeed, he ended up shooting his team-mates while trying his hand at Counterstrike recently. But the high-energy man, who picked up his guitar halfway during the interview to sing, is a student gamer’s dream educator. He recently organised a DoTA All-Stars competition within the school and even paid for the prizes, worth $1,100 in all, out of his own pocket.
The 49-year-old has also fought for a gaming centre to be build on-campus, and has recently got the green light from MOE. The $80,000 gaming centre, located near the general office, will be where student can play the latest games. It is expected to be ready by next month.given these efforts, the school won the Gears of War tournament at the Interschool eGaming Challenge 2007, beating 16 teams from 14 schools. No doubt, his openness towards gaming has endeared the principal, a former national athlete, to his students in his all-boys school.
Among the many SMS messages received from them is this one : “You are THE best principal!”So far, there have been none of the adverse effects such as falling grades that is often linked to video games. The school has obtained value-added academic results for the past three years, something Mr Lourds expects will continue even after the gaming centre is well underway.
Why are you bringing computer games into the school, when other schools are doing exactly the opposite – banning them?
You can’t stop students from gaming. It’s the interest of the new generation, and the schools are fighting a losing battle trying to stop it.I won’t fight it, I will manage it instead. Furthermore, we want many peaks of excellence – our students should also have talents in other areas rather than just academic (ones).
What are the benefits that the gaming centre will bring to the students?
Firstly, by making gaming services available in the school, my students don’t have to go to outside gaming centres and be exposed to negative influences or health hazards there, such as smoking.Secondly, we can also manage them better. For example, before they can even play, they must first buy a coupon and get the teachers who have taught them on that day to sign it, certifying that they have completed their homework and have no CCAs to attend.
Once the coupon is signed, the students can then use it to start playing their games. We will also control their play time. After playing for two hours, they will have to stop and report to a waiting bay, where there will be plants to provide fresh air and a board displaying some eye and hand exercises for them to follow. They can only return to their games after 15 minutes or so.Currently, we are looking at ways to make gaming more healthy. for example, most gaming centres use neon lights, which are harmful to health.
Our gaming centre will be illuminated by natural sunlight instead.I will also be setting up a club for students, who will play a part in managing the gaming centre. This will help foster entrepreneurship in them.
Did your plans to set up a gaming centre in school meet with any resistance from parents?
They loved it! Some of them did raise their concerns, but once I explained the concept to them, they realised they preferred to have their children here, where their gameplay is monitored and their health taken into account, instead of gaming centres outside which many not have any social responsibility. As the principal of a Catholic school, doesn’t it disturb you that most computer games involve violence? Life itself is violent, with all the tsunamis, earthquakes, and wars. We have to get our students ready for real life and not try to shelter them. However, there are some games that do go overboard. When a game is deemed unsuitable by them, students and teachers, who act as consultants, will come to me. I will personally test out (the game). If I find that it is indeed too graphic or too violent, I will ban it.
But the recent Virginia Tech shootings by the south Korean student…
We have to understand that violence is not just from computer games alone, but from many sources like movies and television.Education is the key to managing violence. The Virginia Tech shooting serves to raise awareness; it is an incident that teachers can highlight to students for them to understand the reality of violence.
eLearning
0Montfort Secondary School’s principal, Mr. Simen Lourds, is preparing its students and teachers to be able to react when there is an unpredicted disaster striking us. ( This sentence looks weird no matter how I rephrase, eh? ) They had a day “off” on the 5th of April 2007 and students are expected to do the work and submit it online.
Our school uses 2 main eLearning platform.
http://www.lead.com.sg
http://www.heymath.net
When I tried I access the site at 7am, Heymath was down but later it was up. We have Chemistry and Math homework on there. I didn’t managed to access it but I got my friend to and managed to get the chemistry work in the end. The problem is when I open the file, it is corrupted. I will go to my friend’s house this Sunday and print it and do it again. On Lead, we have English and Chinese, English is just fine but Chinese is something I don’t know how to do it. We have to type in Chinese but the software we are told to download cannot be used. During the time when Heymath were down, teachers posted messages on Lead.com.sg and I didn’t managed to see it only until a minute ago.
It has its pros and cons. The school should not have 2 systems, they really should have 1 instead. They are making things really confusing and messy here. The lead.com.sg portal isn’t user-friendly either. I am using Firefox as my browser as I don’t like how Internet Explorer works and I got message saying I cannot use Firefox on lead.com.sg. Lead.com.sg is good but it is too flashy. Sometime, its loading time is too long. They should use plain html instead but its their system so its up to them. 1422 students using the lead portal and will all of us will have a good system specs to allow us to use lead.com.sg in the first place? Heymath is good as well but the website went down even before the time we are suppose to do the work? ( 8.30am to 4 pm ). When I check the site at 7am – 9am+, it was down. The experience of eLearning is fun nevertheless.
I went for a haircut with Hong Wei, and a lot people phoned me at this time by the way, then we went to Toa Payoh stadium to watch the interschool primary wushu competition ( Group Event ) and that was when my phone’s battery went flat and I believed that denied a lot of phone calls. I apologise if you called me and there is no response. I went with Hong Wei, Lin Feng, Nicholas Foo, Kelvin Chua, Shen Huan and Zhen Wei. Mathew and Benjamin later joined us in the stadium. It was a good watch. My coach’s team was really good but it was a waste that they didn’t win. Didn’t went for Wu Fang training at night because coach said I really need rest and asked me not to go and surpisingly enough, I got a message that all competitors ( I assume secondary students ) have to go for training the coming Saturday which is tomorrow, much of a conicidence if you ask me. I will be there tomorrow. 6 more days ( or rather 5 ) to my event.
Good luck
Brother Andrew and Brother Roger
0Today, our school’s flag were flown at half mast as one of the brothers, teachers of Montfort Secondary School in the past passed away on April 2007. He taught in Montfort during 1960 to 1971 and is a Chemistry teacher. Mr. Tan Thoh Cher was one of his students during those year and you can see how sad Mr. Tan is when he talked about Brother Andrew during the morning Assembly. Mr. Edmund James, my English teacher during Secondary 2, also talked about the cheerfulness and determination of Brother Andrew. He taught Mr. James how to work without tiring yourself out. The school put up a board outside the General Office about Brother Andrew when he visited Montfort in the year 1998 and a book for us to write something to his family. I didn’t know what to write so I didn’t wrote any and I kind of regretted it.
During the afternoon Hall Assembly, the school band played 3 songs including 1 school song in tribute to Brother Andrew’s contribution to the school. Mr. Simen Lourds, Prinicpal of Montfort Secondary School and Mr. Lloyd Yeo, HOD of humanities also sang 2 songs with the school which really say about Brother Andrew’s life.
Brother Roger, one of the brothers, was hospitalized roughly 2 weeks ago due to an injury. Let us pray for him.
9 more days to my wushu competition. I went to Wu Fang as normal and we played… basketball like last time but I feel this is not the right time to do it when competition is drawing near and nevertheless, it was fun. Then we do the normal warm up. Those who are competing went to join the Primary school group in the kicks and they do 1st International Chang Quan’s moves. I totally cannot follow up followed by a few jumps and kicks then we break off. During my routine, Coach changed 2 of my moves, they are in between moves. Make me look sharper then Bing Han, Jaryl helped me change some of my moves in my first section. Mainly to make me look confident. They are great guys. Cookies for them and coach. I will test some of them tomorrow, as long as I can do it without looking or being uneasy with them. I will use them during the coming interschool. I really need a good rest now. How I wish I can accompany them but I have my O’s to take care of but I will be back.
I will be back…
Wushu, Google Results and Sports day
0I went to Wu Fang ( Cairnhill ) on Thursday and today ( Saturday ) to train for the coming interschool. Basicially it was great when I am training there. Coach Xin Ru helped me to change a few of my moves and she keep asking me to change to contact lense and not to wear spectacles during wushu training. The way I wore it make me look like Lao Fu Zi (Old Master Q). Ren Zoe won 2 golds and 1 silver and I could see he is not really happy with his own result when he told me about it. He got Silver in his cudgel and he lost to Bryan, another Wu Fang students. He lost to Bryan by 0.03. I tried to encourage Ren Zoe already. We went to Paragon’s Taster Food Pte Ltd to celebrate their victory. I am not sure why I am there, I felt quite extra and there is only 6 people who went there. 3 coaches of Wu Fang, 1 assistant coach of Wu Fang, 1 Wu Fang admin and me. I feel quite extra there but anyway since I was there. I enjoy the food there. 13 more days to my competition. 1 year and 4 more months after this coming competiton and if I didn’t win, I know I will regret. Top 3 will be enough. 1st and 2nd will be better of course ( I got second last year ). I have to win for myself, for the school, for Wu Fang. All the best for Montfort Wushu Team and Wu Fang Wushu’s students.
I was just curious the other day, how I rank for different results and I did a search on Google Singapore ( I support Google as a SE by the way) website and I am very surprise to find out
Guo Hong – 8th results
Mr. Simen Lourds – 1st Result
I rank better on Google for my prinicpal’s name than my own name. Haha. Anyway I don’t object to that. My prinicpal is really a person whom I respect so he should be above me.
Our school had its 8th Inter-house Track & Field Meet 2007 meets on last Friday. We are honoured to have Brothers of St Gabriel from Asia in our meet as well. Despite many problems which occured that day like the rain, we really have had many fun that day. My house, blue house, won.
MinNativ: English Writing Workshop
0MinNativ, a project started by the our Gaint Chief, Mr. Simen Lourds, has started already. It was mentioned to our school by Mr. Simen a week after the DOS ( Directors of Schools ) meeting hosted by Montfort. Basicially, it is to improve English Language standard of North Zone schools. Before this project had started, Mr. Simen explained how using internationally accepted English is important yet we still cannot abandon the use of “Singlish”. We need to know when to use the correct form of English at the correct time. This project started with the school signing a “contract” that we agree to take part in this project and afterwhich we have a English Writing Workshop.
Today, my class, 4E2, along with 4A2 and 4A3 attended a English Writing Workshop conducted by Principal, Montfort Secondary School, Mr. Simen Lourds in the school hall from 11pm to roughly 12.30pm.
The workshop is basicially great. We learned about ways to write a good essay. To summarise it in the simplest form. Essay writing is divided into 2 types: Inductive and Deductive and a good Thesis Statement is very important for a good essay or essential I should say. A good conclusion summarising all paragraphs by linking them together is a must as well. I went to do a research and I found this site (Social Reseacrh Methods) which explains what these really are. I will write an essay using this method when I get the chance to ( Maybe on Friday ).
15 more days to my spear event. Seems like I am still not consistent with my spear yet. I was at my top form during December 2006 but it seems like my standard had dropped since then and is still dropping. Lets see what happen tomorrow. Congratulate to Ren Zoe and a few other Wu Fang students winning medals from the Primary category.
Curry Chicken
0Just a quick note on what I wrote yesterday, it should be spelt as Jaryl instead of Jared and the undefined Z is called Jun An.
I did well for my routine today and I screwed up a bit yesterday night at Wu Fang but anyway….
Today, Prinicpal of Montfort Secondary School cooked Chicken Curry in front of the whole school. Most of us get a share of it of course but does anyone ever think why did he do that? I personally like the curry and personally told him about it ( hey, its not easy. ). Maybe a bit too spicy thats all but what comes to your mind when a prinicpal of a school cooking 1400 students-worth of curry for his gaints ( refer to his students )?
What I see in the action is not that Mr. Simen is trying to show off but instead no matter what position you are in, how high you sit, who you are, all of us are equal. He is really trying very hard to create a school of students that really love to come to school to enjoy their studies instead of coming to school and fear what is above them (teachers, HOD, DM etc) but is still disciplined enough to know what is right from wrong. I am not a Catholic myself so I don’t really know the extact story but I promise I will find out more about this. Just 1 day before Jesus died on the cross, he gathered all his disciple and he washed their feet. Isn’t that what you really see today?
I have a friend who feedback to me saying my blog has a serious “look” with all its blog posts like this… haha well my friend, I will try to make them more “fun”
